Biocidal products and their proper use

On 15 April 2025, the Chemicals Office of Slovenia published a call for the correct use of biocidal products, in which it reiterated the need for the correct use of biocidal products and the obligations related to their notification. Biocidal products, such as disinfectants, insecticides and preservatives, play a key role in protecting human and animal health and the environment. However, their use requires special attention, as incorrect use or inadequate registration can lead to serious consequences.

Why is the notification of biocidal products important?

According to Regulation (EU) No 528/2012, all biocidal products must be duly notified or authorised before they can be placed on the market. This means that the products must be entered in the national register of biocidal products, which ensures their compliance with the law and their safety for users and the environment.

The Slovenian Chemicals Office has highlighted that there are products on the market that are not notified, which means they are illegal and must be withdrawn from circulation. This is especially true for products containing sulphur and intended for disinfecting equipment that comes into contact with food and feed ( SOURCE ).

Biocidal products and their notification process?

The notification process involves the preparation of extensive documentation, which includes, among other things:

• safety data sheet in Slovenian

• product label

• product composition

• performance data

• information about the manufacturer and active substances

The competent authority then checks the product's compliance with regard to active substances, product type, labelling and other requirements.
