How to generate UFI code?

The UFI code is generated using a specific algorithm provided by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) - Unique Formula Identifier Generator. The UFI generator is a web-based application that can be used online. Its use is free of charge and available in all official languages of the European Union.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to generating a UFI code:

  1. Collect necessary information:

  • company VAT number (if not available or chose not to use it, check the box I declare that the company does not have a VAT number)

  • specific formulation number of the mixture.

2. Generate the UFI code:

  • Access the UFI Generator: Visit the ECHA UFI Generator page.

  • Input VAT number: Enter your company’s VAT number. If you have obtained a specific company key from ECHA instead of a VAT number, use that.

  • Input formulation number: Enter the unique formulation number for the mixture.

3. Algorithm process:

  • The tool will use the provided information (VAT number and formulation number) to generate a unique UFI code through a specific algorithm.

  • The UFI code format is: "UFI: XXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ-WWWW".

Entering this information into the UFI Generator, will generate your unique UFI code. Be aware that the system does not save the created UFIs automatically; this must be done by the user.

Please note that the generation of the UFI code is only the first and shortest step, while then it is absolutely necessary to submit also the Poison Centres notification (PCN). If the notification to the poison centres is not arranged the UFI code is empty - does not contain the required data and is therefore inadequate.

Example:

Company VAT number: DE123456789

Formulation number: 001234

Using these inputs, the UFI Generator tool will produce a UFI code like this: "UFI: N1QV-R02N-2005-D5Q1".

When is UFI code needed?

The UFI code is required for products that are classified for health or physical hazards under the EU’s Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging. Classified products are those which display a pictogram.

A UFI code is not required for products classified as environmentally hazardous.
